Book Recommendation: The Way of the SEAL
Summerfield, Florida
I'm really blown away by the book titled The Way of the Seal: Think Like an Elite Warrior to Lead and Succeed by Mark Divne.
The author is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL with a unique background that caught my attention. I am a yoga instructor and am always struck by the number of successful people who I bump into at the yoga studio. The clientele does not square with the stereo typical hippie yoga person.
In Marks book, in the acknowledgement section he mentions right away two huge influences in his life. One is his martial arts mentor and in the second paragraph is his yoga teacher Tim Miller. I'm pretty stoked to see such an elite operator and successful person acknowledge the power of the yoga practice. As I always say to newer students, yoga is not really an exercise class. Physical fitness is surely an ancillary benefit, however the practice is more a mental fitness program. And Navy SEALS are the toughest of them all.
Like all successful people, he builds on the shoulders of giants as the saying goes. The book does rehash or repackage well established philosophies, but from the perspective of a SEAL and then helps the reader apply crucial habits such as "Front Sight Focus" to their everyday lives. Rehashing or repackaging of ideas is a strength. I love to read self-help and leadership type books. Over the years I easily see the commonalities handed down through the centuries which help me establish or re-establish lost habits.
I believe this book to be special. In fact I believe what this Mark Divine is creating via SEALFIT and the Unbeatable Mind Academy is so very yogic and inspiring.
Check out the below video on mental toughness which is a theme throughout the book.

2014 New Beginnings
Summerfield Florida
As the saying goes each passing moment is another chance to turn it all around. But who says we're so far afield that we need such drastic course changes?
I am a goal setter by nature and am always looking for ways to fine tune my goals. I love the concept of life management. Now I've stumbled upon some great concepts that I'm grappling with. Many of the different fields of philosophy, self-help, task management, leadership studies, management ect. all have significant cross-over and commonalities. It really does boil down to semantics.
This year I've set an intention versus a resolution. Very yogic of me indeed.
The Sanskrit word Sankalpa means 'resolve' or 'resolution' with a yogic twist. The term acknowledges that designer of a life is the mind, and to get a handle on a goal, resolution or an intention one must discipline the mind. It is about a larger arc of life. We don't really need to bring things into our life as all that we require really resides within ourselves. Thus we tap into the mind and call forth prana and direct said life force.
What I love about this concept is that it is anathema to multi-tasking which I struggle with mightily. It's just fine though, as struggle and problems is what teaches. There is no such thing as perfection, only perfect effort. In my yoga classes I love to say that we are practicing yoga, this is not yoga perfect.
Another concept I intend to work on this year is what the Navy SEALS call Front Sight Focus. This term describes the incredible concentration, the single-minded focus a team displays when dispatching a target. These incredible men are aware of what is happening around them, but there objective never leaves the front sight. BOOM!
I hope to apply these concepts to drive my business life, yogic life, love life to achieve self-mastery.

Allaire's New Land Boat
San Anselmo, California
When I finally landed in Naples Florida back in 2009 (click here to read that blog post) after my seagoing voyage of discovery thru El Carib I was car-less and needed some transportation. I ended up purchasing the "Green Hornet" my 2001 Honda Accord with 64k on the odometer. She served me well and true.....I piloted her across the United States from Florida to my current home in California.
Well, things move on and this blog has definitely become more Land than Sea....especially evidenced by my new Land Rig.
After graduation I took a job as a Mortgage Banker & Broker at Equitable Mortgage Group and have been working on that business now for about a year and a half. It really is a business where everything communicates including what you drive.
Not long after I sold Christa I was doing my job.....engaging realtors and checking out some Open Houses to see what's on the market thinking maybe I could provide some financing. Well I pulled up to an 8 million dollar home in Ross CA looking very sharp with the exception of the Green Hornet which looked tired with more than a 100k on the odometer. Right or wrong good or bad, a car transmit messages of success or failure. I felt embarrassed.
So I bought a Mercedes Benz......poor baby has to drive a Benz. I've not had a moment of regret. What a magnificent piece of engineering and pure pleasure to drive.
All good in the hood!

Christa is Sold. An End of an Era
San Rafael, CA
It happened as quick as a Caribbean squall.....she's sold. The new owners Jon & Sara having been cruising and sailing aboard a Catalina 36 and felt they needed something more robust before crossing the Pacific.
So it is with a sense of relief and heavy emotion that I parted company with Christa yesterday. She will be hauled out of the water and trucked up to Bellingham Washington where the new owners plan on cruising the San Juans for the winter. Then they will head south.

So it is with a sense of relief and heavy emotion that I parted company with Christa yesterday. She will be hauled out of the water and trucked up to Bellingham Washington where the new owners plan on cruising the San Juans for the winter. Then they will head south.
I think I'm still a bit in shock that I don't own Christa anymore. Need time to process. I will reiterate that my sailing days are not necessarily over. I think at some point in my life I will return to the sailing life. I'm still a relatively young person and continue to improve my health. Plenty of time.
Meanwhile, this blog was created specifically for sailing but will continue to evolve as my many interest in this world evolve. Please stay on!

Puerta Vallarta Mexico Visit
Puerta Vallarta Mexico
My girlfriend and I jumped aboard a plane and headed to Mexico to rest and celebrate a birthday. Mexico has such charm to it ALL deriving from the gracious nature of its people. They honestly enjoy presenting an experience.
Of course a trip to Mexico presents a opportunity to work on my photography skills. I present some of my photos!
And there you have it......a little slice of Mexico from the lens of Christian Allaire!
